October 6th, 2016 – Deadmau5 and Kaskade have finally released the long awaited collaboration, “Beneath With Me.” This song marks the first major collaboration since the mega-hit, “I remember.” Fans were eagerly awaiting the release of this song since a small miscommunication between the two artists appeared on Twitter which confirmed the soon-to-be-released single. The three artists (including Skylar Grey) were supposed to keep their own portions of the song under-wraps as they worked in it individually. Apparently an early version was distributed by Kaskade through his Soundcloud without the sign-off of Deadmau5 as per the awkward tweet issued below:

For any of you unfamiliar with these two artists, they have a history with one of the greatest collaborations to hit the scene, “I Remember.” Currently just past its 8th anniversary, this memorable trance track is probably humming in the back of your mind even if you ironically couldn’t put a name to it. We all remember this song fondly and begged for the duo to put forth something new. Which brings up the big question, what do we think of this new song?
To be blunt it feels a little lacking. Of course it’s a beautifully polished song — which is what we’d expect from these two as experts in their craft, but it just feels empty. You wait and you wait for something unexpected, but it just feels like a two-verse incomplete track. We’re not talking about a “1..2..3..JUMP” or a “PUT YOUR #$^% HANDS UP!” kind of moment by any means, but just something to change the level of energy in the song.
Does the music video enhance the song in any way? Not really. The video feels just as incomplete as the song is. Take a look below and judge for yourself. A music video is supposed to elevate a song or create some sort of atmosphere that brings you closer to the producer’s headspace. Again, here it seems disjointed and doesn’t QUITE match the airy vocals of this piece.
Maybe this is not entirely fair to say to these legends, but with the weight of goodwill that “I remember” has generated, we all should expect them to raise the bar even further. This isn’t a matter of striking gold twice, but really just an expectation based on the talent. There didn’t seem to be any sort of envelope-pushing or boundary-breaking going on here. So what does this mean? Absolutely nothing in the long run. There will be incredible remixes of this song that I’m sure will elevate it past everyone’s first take at this song. The feeling you’ll walk away with after experiencing this track is the feeling you get from your parents when they tell you, “were not mad, were just disappointed.”
