Deadmau5 has recently announced a partnership with Masterclass.com. This winter he will be releasing a 23 video series to “teach music production,” for a fee of $90 — the closest we’ll get to a Deadmau5 music school. How much skill can you really absorb within 23 videos for $90? That’s the real question here, but this could be a pretty amazing first-hand look at a legend at work. We know we’ve been covering a lot about Deadmau5 lately, but between his upcoming album release and now the Masterclass – he’s been a busy man.
So what’s this Masterclass going to cover? From what we can tell you $90 will gain access to about 23 videos of various topics (listed below) that range from process and structure to theory and even on-stage aspects of putting on a show. Something else to be aware of is that Deadmau5 is one of the most streamed/youtubed artists ever so there’s already a ton of “watching me work and seeing what I do” type of videos floating around the web. The man literally built q studio to accommodate him producing while he livestreams. So what does Deadmau5 have to say about his Masterclass?
” yeah its more of a shitload of footage about like…my process/approach…not like a technical hands-on… but think of it of like a fucking 4 – 8 hour long process interview”
To be honest, that description is essentially what we predicted for this type of program. The $90 price tag is extremely affordable for access to this kind of information from someone of Deadmau5’s caliber and we think this will really appeal to a wide range of production enthusiasts. He’s a hard worker and it sounds like that will shine through in this series. However, (playing devil’s advocate here) maybe this will also end up being a $90 reality check for people looking for that silver bullet to success – only to find out Deadmau5 is about the grind.
We just hope he took this whole thing seriously and doesn’t unleash the snark for half the series. If any of you had a chance to check out the Razer interview series with Steve Duda, he walked a fine line but ended up being pretty insightful. Once the man gets comfortable and puts that jaded shield down he really lets his knowledge and experience shine through.
