Spotify recently announced a major partnership with Hulu to bundle together an affordable entertainment experience for college students. This partnership joins together Spotify Premium and Hulu’s ‘limited commercial’ tier together for $4.99 a month. This is a major step for the global audio platform as it seeks to further develop their subscriber base and fend off the growing competition for streaming services. )
This partnership is a very interesting move as we’ve never seen two separate streaming channels join forces. With the every growing fracture of streaming services (and shrinking wallets of college students), this move goes against the grain of the industry. At $4.99 a month, this is roughly a $13/month savings for students resulting in a savings of over $150 a year if they were to buy these services separately. For those of you college students out there, $150 equates to roughly 6 liters of Jack Daniels, 186 Miller Lites, or 360 cans of the midwestern college legend, Beer 30.
This also comes at an interesting time as rumors swirl about Spotify going public. The subscription service has been quietly developing a powerful advertising solution, and this unique move builds a unique offering that their competition doesn’t have. Spotify already has the largest music catalog among the competition, and now they bring a television library to match.
Hopefully this offering/bundle opportunity will roll out to non-students in the near future. It’s one of the few business decisions we’ve seen in the streaming battle that actually seems to benefit the consumers and not require everyone to shell out additional cash. Former Netflix partners are some of the biggest offenders (looking at you, Disney), that have broken ties to form additional streaming subscriptions but this is the first time we’ve seen two forces come together. Hopefully this is the start of something great.
