Everyone has their own personal preference when it comes to headphones. Earbuds are always a favorite, (and up until recently, that was all I used), but many people really prefer to use standard over-ear headphones. My personal weapon of choice here, is SOL Republic’s Tracks HD. I really didn’t do a whole lot a research before making my decision, but I was incredibly happy with taking a chance here.
Some of the major wins:
-Nearly indestructible band
-Adjustable (and removable) ear cans (referred to as sound engines)
-MAJOR customization (tons of color options for bands and cords)
…and above all else, incredible sound.
I’ve been very pleased with the sound quality that comes from these. They have a solid mix of highs and mids, and a strong bass to round them out. It’s a great combination of sound, and definitely great for recording purposes. At the end of the day, when it comes to headphones, you want to wear something comfortable. Chances are, you will be wearing them for a few hours a day (time definitely flies when you start producing), so make sure you have something that fits well.
I’ve been asked why not Dre Beats? I think they are some decent headphones, but definitely not for production. The bass is a little overpowered compared to the rest of the levels, and that definitely washes out some finer points when you are doing some fine-tuning. My only real gripe with Dre Beats, is how brittle the headband is. They aren’t even in the same ballpark as SOL when it comes to durability, and that’s a definite shame when you shell out hundreds of dollars to something that can crack in half with a little bit of pressure.
So go ahead, I recommend giving them a shot.
