Deadmau5 released his new compilation album on November 16th, 2018 on Spotify, mau5ville: Level 2. This compilation album is the second release in the mau5ville series and features a number of collaborators including the Canadian singer, Lights, and the Australian musician (and icon in the world of Ableton producers), Mr. Bill.
Starts off with a beast of a song, Drama Free. This track featuring Lights, comes out swinging and sets the tone for the EP. It reminds us of some early Crystal Method mixed which immediately caught our attention. Once we were hooked, the contrast of gritty bass guitar with Lights’ airy vocals were all we needed to prep that “on repeat” button.
By the way, the music video is weird as hell….
From there the album bounces a bit. The second choice in the track list felt a little off. It was a remix of the first, but just felt like a bad interpretation or misdirection. Drama Free felt like a refreshing new direction with just a splash of Ghosts ‘n Stuff. This (as a follow up track?) was jarring — pulling you back from the light into a glitchy blur. Completely understand this was a remix and it’s supposed to be an artist’s re imagining, but it just wasn’t for us.
Later in the album, GG give us a straight shot of OG Deadmau5. Its exactly what we fell in love with from the beginning. A crisp 4-on-the-floor beat with the filtered stabs that are really just the calling card of Deadmau5. It’s the kind of tune that brings you into a complete state of flow; before you know it the track changes and 8 minutes of your day have blown past you. The remix by Gallya is pretty amazing too. It remind us of the highway shootout scenes from the Matrix.
Most of the EP is worth a listen, so definitely check it out.
